Working with Older People

A variety of issues related to working with older people are covered in this section. These include subjects such as understanding the needs and requirements of older people, crisis intervention, attitudes towards older people and the negative effects of ageism, empowering older people to have choice, dealing with death, mental health in old age, healthy eating for older people and how to motivate a positive approach to living.

The Effects of Ageism

This course looks at the negative effects of 'Ageism'. Participants will address their own views towards older people and how this reflects on the way they work.

Course OP1            One Day

Equality for Elders

Equal opportunity for older people is often overlooked. This course considers ways of promoting equality by using practical techniques. Participants will identify the benefits of promoting equality for elders in our society and practice effective methods to combat prejudice towards older people.

Course OP2            One Day

Empowering the Older Client

Giving older people the right to decide and the right to say no is not always an easy task. Participants will consider how to support clients in a way that encourages decision making from them without making them feel pressurised.

Course OP3            One Day

Risk Assessment and the Older Client

This course reflects on the appropriateness of taking risks to enable older people to live a more independent lifestyle. Participants will look at legal issues and practice structured methods of assessing the element of risk involved in individual cases, to help them in developing their skills in this area of work.

 *

 

Course OP4            One Day

Elder Abuse - Hopes for a Safe Future

Explores and challenges the issues surrounding the complex nature of elder abuse and neglect. Participants consider the many forms of abuse that older people may experience and how to recognise and deal with them.

Course OP5            One Day

A Healthy Lifestyle for Elders

Participants will consider practical methods of promoting ways for older people to live a healthier lifestyle, including activities, diet and using local resources.

Course OP6            Two Days

Mental Health and Older People

Looks at mental disorders in old age including confusional states, dementias, depression and paranoid disorders. It concludes with a method of approach to mental disorders.

Course OP7            Two Day

Death with Dignity

A course offering the opportunity for participants to gain knowledge of how to meet the needs of terminally ill people. Shows how to deal with the emotive feelings often expressed by the client, relatives and staff themselves. Also examines the specific needs of differing cultures.

Course OP8            One Day

A Pattern for Living - Delivering Care Services to Elders

Aimed to develop skills and competence in the delivery of care services and promote professional practice. Participants will gain practical skills in the care of older people and develop a positive philosophy of promoting self-esteem and autonomy along with equality of opportunities for older people. Also covers the need for accurate documentation and dealing with crisis situations.

Lifting and Handling Skills

This course is specifically designed for staff who are required to assist in the movement of

clients as a part of their every day work.  It addresses the implications of lifting and handling including EEC legislation.  Participants will practice approved lifting techniques and demonstrate ways of gaining the confidence and co-operation of the client.

Course OP10          One Day

Caring for People with Mobility Problems

 *

 

The course will consider safe practices and give practical experience in the use of walking aids and wheelchairs.  Participants will gain knowledge and awareness of pressure areas and skin care.  They will also develop skills in encouraging movement and exercise with clients.

Course OP11          One Day

Handling Death and Bereavement

Will develop participants skills of caring for someone who is terminally ill.  Concentrates on how staff can use

 appropriate methods and techniques to ensure the practical needs of the client are being met and also address the psychological and spiritual needs of clients - including those from differing cultures.  Participants will consider appropriate approaches when talking to someone who is dying or has recently been bereaved and also people’s reactions to death.

Sensory Awareness

Participants will explore their own views and perceptions with regard to sensory loss and be given the opportunity to experience for themselves the effects of such loss.  Areas covered will include sight, hearing and speech as well as taste, touch and smell.  The aim of the course is to heighten participants’ awareness towards the effects of sensory loss so as to enable them to be better equipped to support people who have experienced such a loss.

The Helpers Handbook

Providing a valuable insight of the skills and situations that everyone who is involved in helping or caring for others need to be familiar with. This course is particularly suitable for those who need support in basic counselling for specific situations and short-term encounters.

Course OP14          Two Days

Survival Skills for Carers

This course is designed to provide carers with an insight into a range of topics that are relevant in enabling them to develop and expand upon their skills and knowledge in the following areas: Help for Carers, Looking after yourself, Relationships and Feelings, Assertiveness, Benefits Money and Legal Matters, Setting up Support Systems.  The course is aimed at those who are primary or informal carers and professional carers who have little or no experience.  The course content can be adapted to cater for established professional carers who wish to update their skills and knowledge.
