Addresses the need for constant review to ensure a viable and responsive delivery of services. Participants will develop skills to obtain constructive feedback from users and implement change in their service delivery, promoting a positive response from sheltered housing users.

Promotes the benefits of tenant participation. Participants will see how setting up tenant committees in sheltered housing can enhance a positive attitude from service users and assist in helping sheltered housing staff to empower individual tenants to live an independent lifestyle.

An intensive course covering a wide range of subjects and topics.  This course has been

written so that it can be separated into individual modules.  These can be taken individually or over a longer period to suit your training needs.  This is an extremely cost effective way of updating staff on current issues and developing skills.

Assessing Prospective Tenants of Sheltered Housing

Designed to help those staff responsible for assessing the needs and suitability of sheltered housing applicants. Beneficial to housing officers involved in working with sheltered housing services, wardens and scheme managers.

Developing a Residents Record System for Tenants of Sheltered Housing

Participants will learn how to set up and maintain an effective yet easy to use recording system to ensure factual information is recorded and easy to find. They will also discover the benefits of a system that is easily adaptable and allows both the organisation and the user to review service delivery to the tenant.

Effective Report Writing for Sheltered Housing Staf

Will help participants to formulate structured and precise reports and develop their recording skills. It is an ideal course for those new to report writing or for staff who wish to polish up their report writing skills

Course SHS10       One Day

Developing a Procedure Manual for Sheltered Housing Staf

A training package built around developing a procedure manual for staff working in sheltered housing. It concludes with the formulation of a draft copy of the manual.

Course SHS11       Two Weeks

Developing a Tenant Handbook for Sheltered Housing

Allows participants to develop a format for initiating a comprehensive, yet easy to use handbook, for tenants

living in sheltered housing. It will conclude with the formulation of a draft copy of a handbook for sheltered housing tenants.

Course SHS12       One Week

Managing Change - A Positive Approach

Designed to help staff working within the sheltered housing sector in understanding the reasons for

implementing change.  Participants will benefit from developing skills to enable them to respond effectively to new working practices and adopting a positive image towards change.

Course SHS13       One Day

Health & Safety in Sheltered Housing

Assists staff to recognise and understand the implications of Health & Safety at Work and their responsibilities under the Health & Safety act.  Participants will develop practical skills in risk assessment and good health & safety practice.

Course SHS14       One Day

Making Sheltered Housing ‘Best Value’

This two-day session will allow participants to consider how they could make ‘Best Value’ an every day

 working practice in their own organisation and evaluate the benefits of this.  The concept of ‘Best Value’ will be debated and participants will have the opportunity to be involved in practical workshop sessions to help plan strategies for implementing ‘Best Value’.

Current Legislation and its implications for Sheltered Housing?

This intensive course contains five separate modules, which can be taken in a one week block or as five separate training events (see SHS16a to 18e below).   Each module covers a specific area of legislation.  This enables participants to consider a wide range of current legislation that has particular relevance to sheltered and supported housing services.  The course explores the legal implications for sheltered housing providers and how this impacts on service delivery, along with the role of the scheme manager.

Reviewing the Service – Questioning our Perceptions

This event is designed to be equally beneficial for Board Members, Councillors, Staff and Tenant / Leaseholder Representatives.  It is an invaluable tool for any organisation that is looking toward, or in the process of, conducting a review of their sheltered housing service.  The event is linked to a ‘Mystery Shoppers’ exercise that SHN will conduct prior to the training day (the cost of this will be quoted separately as this will vary according to size of the organisation).  The morning will be more of an 'informing' process, enabling participants to gain an overview of what is happening Nationally and give an insight of the views of sheltered housing users.  The afternoon will focus on  'putting ideas into practice' or 'The Challenge' part of the day.  This will give participants the chance to examine their current perceptions and consider how the group should move forward with their task of reviewing the sheltered housing service to ensure that it

 matches user demand and local need.

Course SHS17       One Day

Whose Home is it anyway!

Explores common beliefs and attitudes regarding the rights that tenants/leaseholders have and what they can and can’t do within sheltered housing and tests these against current legislation.  Participants will debate the issues surrounding some topical case scenarios taken from actual events where users have successfully challenged service users over such issues as use of master keys, sending users details / information to other

 *

 

 agencies and involuntary monitoring.

Course SHS18       One Day

Understanding Older Homeless People

Although older people are a significant segment of the homeless population, they are often overlooked or misunderstood by those providing supported housing.  Participants will be invited to explore their own perceptions of ‘homelessness’ and examine the validity of these beliefs.  Participants will then consider appropriate ways of supporting older homeless people who subsequently move into sheltered housing.

Course SHS19       One Day

Setting Boundaries when living on site

Enables resident staff to develop their skills in defining and implementing clear boundaries so as to establish a separation between their work and personal life.  Participants will have the opportunity to create an ‘action plan’ to assist them in the implementation process.
